Zune speculation and reality

Zune (Though this name has some other meaning in Hebrew and French Canadian term, and
Microsoft's Zune
Microsoft's Zune
which isn’t good) is a brand from Microsoft that incorporates a line of portable media players, software that will drive the devices, and an online service for acquiring and sharing media. It was previously thought that Zune was one of Microsoft's media players under "Project Argo". However, it now seems that the "Zune" brand will be used for all media players and other services, throughout the new project, just like Apple’s iPod. MSN music site’s download section will be disband and brought to Zune site.

Microsoft will be using a new digital rights management (DRM) system to protect content on the Zune system, and the Zune will not support Microsoft PlaysForSure or other DRM systems such as FairPlay. Microsoft has announced a music store called the Zune Marketplace that will integrate with the Zune player. They have announced "millions of songs" available for purchase using Microsoft Points, the same currency used on Xbox Live for per-song purchase. The Zune Marketplace can also be used as a subscription-based flat-fee service, if users purchase a monthly "Zune Pass".

What Zune will be able to do?
#Zune will be able to send photos and music (no videos) from Zune-to-Zune via WiFi. The music files will only be listenable for three days or three plays, whichever comes first.
#Able to play movies, videos and view pictures
#Updatable firmware
#Ability to create a "ZuneTag," which is a username/profile that is visible to others who wirelessly scan the area for fellow Zune users.
#Customizable wallpaper on the Zune can be changed to any user specified image.
#The Zune will play standard podcast files, which are usually available in unprotected MP3 or AAC format.
#The player software will automatically convert audio and video that is in a format not supported by the Zune into a format that does.
#Able to show other Zunes nearby what you are listening to or doing through advanced settings.
#Zune will come with preloaded 9 Audio tracks, 12 music videos, 3 short films and 12 classic rock posters.

There is lots of speculation about Zune around, but none of the speculation seems to be revealing the actual interface system of Zone. Guess we have to wait till November 11 when it will be released in USA. Europe, Australia and Asia have to wait till mid, 2007. But you all know once it does out it will spread everywhere.

from what I see its an iPod give or take some features.

Nothing special enough about it really, though maybe that was Microsofts aim with the Zune.
2. November 4th 2006 @ 13:12. Kams Says:
Exactly ahmed, Microsoft has been trying to get in Music industries over two years, remember MSN music and Real collaboration?

This is just another ambitious project to catch Apple. Target is iTune market not iPod actually. Since the way i see iPod is much lighter and much flexible than Zune so far.
3. November 4th 2006 @ 13:14. Ahmed Says:
Heh yeah, they also tried with the portable media centre, I think they realised that was over kill.

Problem with MS is they don't/cant do simple, xbox, now xbox 360 (not that sony is any better).

I Never really supported the zune to be honest
4. November 4th 2006 @ 13:45. Kams Says:
Actually biggest problem of MS is they still pretend to live in 80's where they are the king. They don't want to admit others are building better than them.

For example -
In OS testing i found MAC OSX Leopard much effective than Vista, since changing to Vista will cost a lot in long term, though both have the looks and performance.

In browser see IE7 couldn't bring anything new than Firefox, still IE7 have the same bugs they used to have in IE6.

5. November 4th 2006 @ 13:49. Ahmed Says:
well the disucssion of the better OS (so-called) and all that is really moot in more ways than one.

They act like kings from the 80's cos they still are kings, they dominate in software and it is that same attitude they believe that will let them dominate in everything else.

Except maybe the game console world were they are taking a far more humble approach with teh 360.

Unless Apple make a console to rival the 360 though they will have one less against vista too...

There philsophy in general is changing though (open source adoption for instance), dunno if its for the better though...
6. November 4th 2006 @ 14:01. Kams Says:
About Microsoft's accomplishment no one doubt, criticism is their approach and tendency to over through consumers.

Yes MS maybe finally realizing the same attitude won't let them dominate anymore. Recent Novel alliance, open office is sign of their shifting atitude.

In console war for domination Xbox360 did good, PS3 not yet out worldwide so we can't predict what they will do. But i didn't find anything spectacular in PS3 except for the processor. that's unique.

For Apple, they better stay away from console industries, they are far better with what they do now.
7. November 4th 2006 @ 14:10. Ahmed Says:
Yeah but I don't think they are adopting open source for the right reasons, sounds like another tactic to destroy it.

In terms of consoles, I think the 360 has won already, the ps3 is expensive and few, not many people can afford it, and not many people care about it.

Sony has tied itself down making it a blu-ray player, its the be all end all, if blu-ray doesn't kick off (that is if dvd remains standard, or worse hd-dvd is adopted), then the ps3 will be at a major losing point.
8. November 4th 2006 @ 14:24. Kams Says:
Don't forget Nintendo they cover 25% of the console market, and their Wii is coming out too.

In business sense Sony will remain the dominant console supplier since they have both PS and PSP. Curren't market data shows they supply 40% of console(PS & PSP together). And wherever they loose ground Japanese and Korean clients are crazy for Sony, the launch date of PS3 in Tokyo sold out in 1 hour.

But much more likely Sony will be a little trouble if HD-DVD become standard. Well what you know like microsoft they always have a escape plan.

One king in Entertainment industry another King in Software

9. November 4th 2006 @ 14:28. Ahmed Says:
umm, they cover less actually. sony has 100million ps2's out, xbox 360 is 24million and GC is 22million I think.

In terms of DS nintendo is dominant by far (latest sales figures from japan show that the DS has outsold the psp on a 10-1 ratio!).

They might be but statistically they are losing ground PR wise, more people are jumping boat and waiting for the Wii, cheaper and easier to get hold of one.

So long as we are talking console wars, I think the Wii will perform just like the DS, sure it has lack lustre graphics, but it still sells well.
10. November 4th 2006 @ 14:45. Kams Says:
Nintendo is using Traditional Asian consumer mentality. Cheap means get it. In one sense why not. Look i myself play X360 a game cost me around US$25-$40 depend on the game. On the other hand Nintendo's client can satisfy their thirst for game much more cost effective manner.

You have to agree Majority game lover can not afford to by x360 game too often. Yes off course Graphics isn't so cool like x360, but fun of playing is no less. Price is a good factor, and Sony overlooked it, thats the reason PS3 didn't make wave just like their PS or PS2 did.

11. November 4th 2006 @ 14:47. Ahmed Says:
exactly, except nintendo is quite possibly offering more fun for less money, at the expense of graphics.

and not even that, Legend of Zelda: Twigliht princess looks really good, so does Super Mario Galaxy. Sure they don't look as great as they might have should the wii have been stronger, but they still look damn well impressive.
12. November 4th 2006 @ 15:58. Kams Says:
Sooner or later the graphics will improve. And sometimes Serious Graphics isn't that important in gameplay, if the story line and action is there.

I still play Jagged Alliance, which isn't so cool in graphics, but i still couldn't find replacement for that.
13. November 4th 2006 @ 16:26. Ahmed Says:
heh, ok.

Nintendo have made it clear hat this gen they are concentrating on innovation and that next gen they will be making a pretty graphics Wii 2 with motin sensing of course.

I think right now they are trying to sell people on the idea of innovation.
14. November 4th 2006 @ 16:32. Kams Says:
Sounds like Toyota

First made the product Cheaper. Gain momentum in the market then goes after innovations, yet always keep the price lower then competitors.

Traditional Japanese business model. .

15. November 4th 2006 @ 16:33. Ahmed Says:
Now if only sony would follow it..
16. November 4th 2006 @ 17:01. Kams Says:
Sony is a Japaneses company with Western Mentality, maybe because half of the board member aren't Japanese. Or Japanese-American and the western influence dictate their judgment.

17. November 4th 2006 @ 17:16. Ahmed Says:
and it seems they judge better than their marekt analysts who probably warned against the moves they have undertaken.
18. November 4th 2006 @ 17:23. Kams Says:
Especially Blu-ray consider to be bad move. And PS3 pricing, since they should know Nintendo is coming with wii.

May be too ambitious move they had ever take.

Though Stock market looks good for them in third qtr. don't know what will happen in 4th
19. November 4th 2006 @ 17:24. Ahmed Says:
it'll probably sink.

Nintendo's stock markets are soaring right now, lots of investor confidence in the Wii. Hey, when investors are involved you know they are putting the money where their mouth is.
20. November 4th 2006 @ 17:29. Kams Says:
You got that right.

In my opinion Sony have now only one card in their hand , to make a deal with samsung for those NANAD flash drive, so that at least they could be the second to come up with hard-disk less computer.
21. November 4th 2006 @ 17:38. Ahmed Says:
well that doesn't have anyway of saving them should the sp3 flop.

They have pretty much put their heart and soul into it.

Same way MS has into its little ring of zune/xbox 360//vista, I think if either 360 or vista flops it will be a darktime for MS.
22. November 6th 2006 @ 17:11. Kams Says:
Vista won't flop might cause some migration and cost users some bucks.

Since Vista RC2 was full of glitch and a require serious high end hardwares, if same goes with Vista RTM user will have to upgrade a lot of their components. And XP SP2 support will be over in a year and half.
23. November 6th 2006 @ 17:15. Ahmed Says:
all the more reason for people to leave windows and move on to another OS realy.

I bet vista is going to lose a lot of market share XP had becuase of htis.

WHen will google hurry up and make an OS?
24. November 6th 2006 @ 17:23. Kams Says:
Thats what i was also wondering. Have you seen Google's Weebly? serious stuff that one.

Though Microsoft launched its Windows Live Writer too. Looks good so far that one.

Sooner or later Google will come into OS market, since the way i see their Google Lab its shifting towards something big everyday. Already they are in Office market, So OS isn't too far.
25. November 6th 2006 @ 17:30. Ahmed Says:
weebly? never heard of it.

Microsofts problem is that they act with copycaticsm, that is what thye have been doing sof ar wtih a lot of their new stuff. Since google is already established, and has the market share in search engines microsofts attitude of copying it just won't cut it.

I look forward to a google os, maybe in the next 2 years? I might be dreaming though...
26. November 6th 2006 @ 17:46. Kams Says:
Weebly just launched today few hours ago. www.weebly.com

Lol! You are not dreaming. Google is persuasive, and innovative what is important for innovation. Soon Goo-OS will hit, i will await just like us there are millions who are waiting.
27. November 6th 2006 @ 17:49. Ahmed Says:
few hours ago? dang, if I knew of its existence I would have done a post or something for it.

So long as google sticks to its simplicity plan, and produces quality software like always, with text based ads and makes the OS free (as I am honestly assuming will be the case), then windows will really have a bit of competition.
28. November 6th 2006 @ 17:56. Kams Says:
Little late bro,
Take pick at one of my article on that: Google’s Ajax innovation: Weebly

I honestly think Windows already having a good competitor on February from AC OSX Leopard, I tested their Beta, and its run on both PC and Mac. But not enough competition, thats true. For some reason lots of people don't want to switch to MacOSX.
29. November 6th 2006 @ 17:59. Ahmed Says:
wait, the new osx will run on PC too?

well now its just up for adoption, but I doubt it will happen easily like you said. Google is a more open name as an innovator, macintosh has put its name down for 'mac only'...
30. November 6th 2006 @ 18:04. Kams Says:
Yes Mac OSX : Leopard will run in both PC and Mac. In fact all the new Apple computers and Laptops are now Intel powered.

31. November 6th 2006 @ 18:06. Ahmed Says:
true but yoiu have to get cracked versions to run on PC's...
32. November 6th 2006 @ 18:19. Kams Says:
Yes that was up untill Mac OSX Tiger. Mac OSX Leopard will be totally platform independent. Not only that you can make even dual boot with windows.

Microsoft expressed Vista's next update might also be platform independent.
33. November 6th 2006 @ 18:21. Ahmed Says:
hmm, to rival it so that mac users cna use windows no doubt.
34. November 6th 2006 @ 18:33. Kams Says:
Yes i think Apple trying to show user's they are not afraid to let the user platform independent. Since recently there was a lot of talk about combining/ standardizing computer systems.

I think this will be the first step. All system can run all OS. Ultimately all software will run in all system and OS. Good idea, don't you think?
35. November 6th 2006 @ 18:36. Ahmed Says:
so lon gas it doesn't get more buggy.
36. November 6th 2006 @ 18:50. Kams Says:
Yes thats right. Hey righting an article on Vista Launching event in Australia, If you find any source mentioning the location pls. let me know.
37. November 16th 2006 @ 20:06. Eric Says:
Sorry Zune, but my Nano is sexy. Plus, your owner is Microsoft.

Good post though!
