In a recent post for the SearchEngine-Weblog, I got the chance to research on the various strategies that firms use to target use activity online.
The Web has been a haven for advertisers. And why not? For there is no other place where virtually every move of the buyer can be tracked.
Every page you view, every click you make, every item you spend time doting on... virtually everything on the web makes it to some server log and can contribute to invaluable statistics.
So in this mine of information, advertisers can target user behavior or user intent.
User behavior targeting is what gets all the privacy folks up in arms cause it means recognizing patterns in the activity of netizens. Intent targeting is more about a short lived immediate targeting on the intention of the user - such as the relevant ads coming up for the search keywords.
While intent targeting is here to stay, programs targeting behavior are bound to rise on the web.
Its a waiting game to see how the advertising methods pan out.
