Say goodbye to your harddisk!

Well the one we all have been waiting for, the hard drive less laptop. But didn’t came from Sony, came from the maker of NAND flash drive Samsung. Earlier this year Samsung announced in Korea they are planning to release their first NAND powered computer, and it’s already published in Korean Samsung site. The model is named Q30 SSD (Solid state disks), in few days the ultra portable model will Q1SSD will be also available to Korean consumers. The price for Q30SSD was posted KRW3.5 million (around $3.7K). No word or press release about lunching these models outside Korea.

Solid State Disk (SSD) Drive

Solid state disks are NAND flash-based memory drives. This concept isn't entirely new. Digital cameras use flash memory to store pictures, as do many MP3 players to store songs. The main problem with flash-based drives is larger capacities are very expensive and they have limited write cycles. These issues are being overcome though and flash memory has several advantages over hard disk drives like lower power consumption, more durability, more compact size, less heat dissipation, quieter operation and faster speed. The SSD reads 300 percent faster (53MB/s) and writes 150 percent quicker (28MB/s) than normal hard drives. As a result, multiple application programs can operate simultaneously and large volumes of data can be edited and reproduced more efficiently. Microsoft Windows XP will boot up 25-50% faster on the SSD than on other drives. Moreover, the typical 1.8-inch hard disk drive weighs around 50 grams; whereas the SSD is 20 to 30 grams lighter, depending on the package type.

The key specification of Q30 SSD: 32 GB NAND flash drive, Li-ion Battery, DVMT Video memory, Intel GMA 900 graphics card, Embedded DMB, 83-key Korean keypad, Intel Celeron M753 (1.2GHz), 12.1-inch screen. It’s a super ultra thin laptop just 1.14 KG weight. Extra customizations are also available such as memory upgrade, extended 6-cell battery etc. That’s best could be extracted so far about Q30-SSD, since none of the translating software can fully translate Korean. Korean Home shopping Network cable Chanel is already advertising this product, but also in Korean language.

The expectation is building up for hard drive less computer. Samsung already make an arrangement with both Apple and Sony to deliver NAND flash drive, which means those two will also humming in to bring some new gadgets powered with NAND.

Is this the same concept as memory cards for video game consoles, but with much more storage space? It looks like it could be good - especially if it can survive an unfortunate incident involving liquids that would destroy a hard disk - but I'd be afraid of losing it somehow. Would it be protected aganst theft?
2. October 16th 2006 @ 21:26. Kams Says:
Much more like the USB memory stick concept. So no worry about Liquids.

Yes it has much higher protection of data security. Since you can password protect it.
3. October 16th 2006 @ 21:31. The Daily Sonnet Says:
Oh, so if someone takes it and doesn't know the password then they'll have no way to use it. That does sound good. Is the $3700 price US dollars or Australian dollars or something else?
4. October 16th 2006 @ 21:38. Kams Says:
Exactly, and since the password is inside the memory core, no program available yet to recover that. Same goes if you forgot your own password, you have to go to samsung's authorize tech center.

US $ mate . Since its just came out and only in Korean market price is high, it will go down sooner or later.

Already it's available in china, hongkong, singapore based online shops. Some gossip that russians are also selling this, but just gossip, no trail yet.

USD, I guess. All these cool gadgets are always expensive. I guess, it appeals to the early adopters and flows down the chain.

can it withstand power cutoff (does it retain memory?)
6. October 16th 2006 @ 21:44. Kams Says:
Somu,
Yes high-tech Gadgets are pricy always. Nothing we can do, research needs cash.

And if you are asking does it contain cach-memory in case of power fail. If you already used any smart phone, that use memory stick, you might already know, power failure dose not wipe off memory, same goes with SSD. And as i know SSD have a larger cach-memory compare to traditional HDD.

thats great. thanks for clearing it up.
8. October 16th 2006 @ 22:44. Kams Says:
No big! somu. Technologyview will cover tech updates and review, as long as i can get source or lead to news
9. October 16th 2006 @ 22:54. somu Says:
do you do normal browsing to identify your leads or is there any tools / trick that you use?
10. October 16th 2006 @ 22:59. Kams Says:
Actually you can say all hell same time.
Search engine, Feed search, News, Press release, Shopping network..personal contact,......all sorts.

You never know what pops up where. Better to keep eyes and ear open for stories.
11. October 16th 2006 @ 23:13. somu Says:
wow. thats interesting. keeping tab on all these stuff would eat up lot of your time, isn't it?
12. October 16th 2006 @ 23:20. Kams Says:
Not really, just keep it in order. Yea definitly you need to give atleast an hour or two.
For example -------
1.a long list of Feed subscription from all the sources
2.some tools that alert you if any specific topic news pops out, news and press alert. like-google news, CNN, Wallstreet,ZDnet etc.
3. Few sites related to my interest i visit first, when i am on.
4. Finally personal contacts, keep in touch with them often, so that they know you are alive

13. October 16th 2006 @ 23:23. somu Says:
"so that they know you are alive"... I liked that.

Finally...it seems every time I update my PC in an effort to get XP to run at an acceptable speed,
I seem to have installed so many applications that it still takes forever to load. I probably spend the
equivalent of 2 weeks of the year sitting in front of my computer waiting for it to boot up!
18. October 17th 2006 @ 07:26. Kams Says:
PokerPro isn't that always a problem with Our Microsoft?
If i may suggest if you need to many program, atleast keep the most important one On_load status only. Rest just remove from startup lists. So that during boot up those won't take up the memories.
19. October 17th 2006 @ 17:28. Aaron Says:
That's amazingly cool! I wish I had one of those!

Aaron.
20. October 18th 2006 @ 10:45. Kams Says:
Aaron, most of we would love to have one of this. But hell i guess we all have to wait since Korean keyboard won't do any good to us. unless you know korean
