OpenOffice 4.0.2 is here- for Free
Well I am a bit late talking about this incredible software, which opens up new era in open sourcing. On 13th October, 2006 OpenOffice.org celebrates its 6th birthday and at the same time launched OpenOffice.org 2.0.4. Those who don’t know OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites (Mac office and Microsoft office too). This is free in every sense-free download, redistributable. OpenOffice.org uses the LGPL (GNU Lesser General Public License).
OpenOffice.org runs on several versions of Windows, including 98, ME, 2000, and XP. Contributed ports of OpenOffice.org exist for FreeBSD, Apple MacOSX, Irix, Linux-PPC, Linux s390, Linux Sparc, and Solaris Intel. Porting activity is underway for Linux/Apha, HPUX, and AIX and developer help is needed for those platforms. Around 64 MB memory and 200 MB disk space is required for recent version of OpenOffice.org installation.
OpenOffice.org suite components are: Writer, Impress, Math, Draw, Calc and Base.
WRITER has everything you would expect from a modern, fully equipped word processor or desktop publisher. In addition WRITER offers direct connection to email software as well as conversion between pdf and other document types.
CALC is the spreadsheet program similar to MS Excel but a lot powerful and robust. Newcomers find it intuitive and easy to learn; professional data miners and number crunchers will appreciate the comprehensive range of advanced functions.
IMPRESS is a truly outstanding tool for creating effective multimedia presentations. Those who use MS PowerPoint already will love it, due to advanced options and flexibilities. Your presentations will stand out with 2D and 3D clip art, special effects, animation, and high-impact drawing tools. Did I say you can create/transform your presentation into flash movies?
DRAW - from a quick sketch to a complex plan, DRAW gives you the tools to communicate with graphics and diagrams. And unlike MS pain this will give you opportunity to covert drawing into flash movie.
BASE- Added to Version 2 and thereafter, BASE enables you to manipulate database data seamlessly within OpenOffice.org. Create and modify tables, forms, queries, and reports, either using your own database or BASE’s own built-in HSQL database engine. BASE offers a choice of using Wizards, Design Views, or SQL Views for beginners, intermediate, and advanced users. BASE supports many popular databases database natively (Adabas D, ADO, Microsoft Access, MySQL), or any database through industry-standard ODBC and JDBC drivers. It also supports any LDAP compliant address book, as well as common formats such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Windows, and Mozilla.
MATH is OpenOffice.org's component for mathematical equations. It is most commonly used as an equation editor for text documents, but it can also be used with other types of documents or stand-alone. When used inside WRITER, the equation is treated as an object inside the text document. Similarly, one can also insert these into other OpenOffice.org programs like CALC and IMPRESS.
I found this very useful in my daily life, and consider using it better then pirated or expensive office software in the market. Yes maybe OpenOffice doesn’t have the looks of Microsoft office but it works better, perform quicker and stable. You won’t regret giving it a shot, what you have to loose, since it’s completely free.

I started using OpenOffice about a year ago. I like it a lot better than the other office programs I've used. Thanks for letting me know there was a new one out.

For power user MS is getting pain in the b..t. Yes open source doesn't have the looks but at least won't force you to upgrade your hardware in every release.
