Offline data, online targeting

Due Credit: TechRepublic
A media marketing company called Axciom is adding a new twist to targeted advertising, taking offline user data to target users with online content. This is another permutation of Face book Beacon like targeting.

So, while no one would like their marketing patterns to be observed, the ultimate result of the program would be exactly that. As online advertising gains more and more attention, more and mote of individual activity will be logged and used to generate targeted ads.

All this does seem like a price to pay for the models of business that are sprucing up on the web. We have online mail accounts, storage accounts and profiles and even online identities. At some point of time we have to pay the price for this. After all, the old maxim holds perfectly true - “There is no free lunch".

If eventually, the targeted advertising mechanism fails to deliver the desired level of revenue, do not be surprised to find services take the paid route.
