My developerWorks - the social network for developers of IBM

DevelopersWorks is consulted habitually by more than 8 million developer and has received more than 47,000 visits to resources of cloud computing in the three last months. IBM has announced the incorporation of social software tools to the developer vestibule developersWorks, the main source of resources online of development for abiertos standards of IBM. My developerWorks, that is as the area of new functionalities is denominated, combines the best thing of social software with the resources of developerWorks.

The presented/displayed new features will allow the developers to accede in real time to technological updates, to connect themselves with other experts worldwide and to obtain essential knowledge with greater rapidity. The tool allows to form each profile adding contacts, contained favourites, and commentaries of forums, blogs and wikis. In the next months, the users of My developerWorks also will be able to use their profiles of social networks like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, to extend their professional networks and to collaborate in new technologies. When being based on Lotus Connections, the technology of social software and enterprise collaboration of IBM, the members of developerWorks can accede now to the following functionalities:

Â My home: It is a customized page that allows the user to follow its own activity and the activities of others by means of a control panel centralized.

Â Technical networks to which it is acceded more easily to locate to other developers with similar opinions. In the space destined to commentaries online it is possible to make questions and to include answers.

Â Technologies collaboration outposts: They allow the users to find people of whom they can learn and with that they can work looking for his profiles by key words, labels, location or name.

Â Groups and activities that the user can create to facilitate the work in shared projects, organizing its ideas, assigning pending tasks and picking up commentaries. IBM recently realised a survey between hundreds of developer worldwide to find out how they use the resources online.
Almost three quarters of the survey ones admitted that they use forums, blogs, wikis and bulletins of Internet to increase their knowledge and to communicate with the friendly and near a 65% expressed their desire to use functionalities of social networks, like which they are in Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

Blu-ray Disc Technology

Blu-ray Disc, is a next generation optical disc format that was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video and for storing large amount of information. Compared to the traditional DVD-R Media, this format can hold up to 25GB on a single layer disc and can hold up to 50GB on a double layer disc. Despite using a blue-violet laser to read and write data, which is different from the laser type used by DVD or CD-R media, Blu-ray devices can be made backward compatible with these media through the use of compatible optical pickup unit.

The future prospects of Blu-ray disc format is even brighter, with several other formats lined up to be released. The BD-ROM format is a read-only version for distribution of HD movies, games and software, etc. The Blue-ray media, BD-R is a recordable format for HD video recording. The BD-RE is a rewritable format for PC data handling and HD video. One more interesting thing about Blu-Ray discs is that you won't need a cartridge to support Blu-ray discs. Unless you need to download some value-added features, you won't need an internet connection either.

Don't expect anonymity in Social Networks

If you think the social network you are use to connect with friends is a God providing you numerous features to mark your presence online, then the God does not go without collecting duties. Social networks make money through several means, some of which are found to compromise the security of the user as well. Some networks sell information about the millions of users they have to advertisers who use such information to study the behavior of consumers and to make use of online trends.

Though social networks remove personal information from such kind of data, the data can be combined with other similar data online to reveal sensitive information about the user. Researchers from University of Texas, Austin, found that from matching data of users having accounts with both Twitter and Flickr, which display user information publicly, they could identify one third of users easily. And the worst part of it is that using the connection between the users and the pattern of social-network graph from different social networking sites, they could even obtain sensitive information about the user. Despite the fact that there are millions who tweet on Twitter and even more who use Facebook, the apparently sophisticated human behavior, like purchases, the friends we make and browsing trends, etc., makes us identifiable, even on the internet.

Unforgettable

The day I found a new solution to a bug that was troubling my team for a long time was unforgettable as my first day in school. The problem was due to an unknown data that had strayed into the system, despite the high security of Unix systems. I was sitting there in the modern bedroom of my apartments almost without taking a breath. It took me almost six days to find out the cause of the problem. Finally it was my good friend Harry who called up and told me that he had uploaded a file into the system sometime ago and asked me to check on it. Then there was the culprit - the potential cause for this long standing error was at last nabbed. It was a strange system file that no one would have doubted. To tell the truth, even guys at Sun Solaris even could not be of much help. It occurred to me as though this would take us a lifetime, in the beginning. I was praised for my effort but I could never forget the trauma that gripped me.
