Nokia's Gold Rush

Due Credit: Sanyedesign, Luxurylaunches
My! Oh! My! What we have here. Gold Rush! I do not have to explain the gold rush to Aussies, since its in their history. But this gold rush is somewhat totally unique.

Designing cell phones isnt what it used to be in few years back. Where cell phone makers used to compete only with other phone makers, and now do battle with handheld devices, multimedia players, GPS systems, cameras, PDAs and who knows what else. And on top of all that, they must deal with the fashion designers who have fallen in love with gold handsets.

Nokia is the latest to join the gold rush with the "Diamond Edition" of its 8800 Sirocco, a luxury version from Germanys Sanyedesign that adds a 24k gold case to its 2-megapixel camera, MP3 player and 100MB built-in memory.

Only 1,000 of them will be available, so they'll be even more exclusive than the gold Dolce & Gabbana Razr, which goes for a mere $300. The Diamond Sirocco, according to Luxurylaunches, is selling for more than 10 times that sum in some auctions on eBay. At that rate, it could give the PS3 a run for its money.

Holiday Gadgets special : Nikon Coolpix L5

Due Credit: Nikon Aus for infos and Shopferret.com.au for prices
Holiday Gadgets
Holiday Gadgets
The holiday season is just around the corner. Whether you are lover of getting gifts or bound to give gifts, very good time to choose your gifts. Regardless of your religion–you have to give and receive gifts in December and January (well unless you are not that social). In holiday not only buying gifts there are plenty other expenses that hurts your wallet, so you should make a mix of quality and economy when you choose gifts. What is the use of buying a few thousand dollars worth gift and struggle next few months, which will spoil the fun of holiday? That is why I plan to bring up cheaper but comparatively high quality gadgets through out this month which I will continue until last day of this year (2006).

Sometimes, you just can not ignore the appeal of simplicity. Unless you are a super camera freak, probably a high tech SLR camera with hundreds of functions will make you feel irritate rather then happy. That could explain why we have seen a rising number of cameras that combine a very short list of features with lots of automation to provide a pretty thought-free shooting experience. This should definitely appeal to people who are confused by the various settings on most cameras and have no interest in learning about their complexity, though as you could imagine, tweakers will want to steer clear. Nikons Coolpix L5 wont give you experience of shooting with a SLR but wont disappoint you either, if you love simplicity yet qualities.
Nikon's Coolpix L5

Top among its features is its 7.2-megapixel CCD sensor and a 5X optical, 38mm-to-190mm, f/2.9-to-f/5.0 zoom lens with optical (a.k.a. lens shift) vibration reduction (VR). This method of VR is the most effective offered by Nikon. Other variations on the theme include electronic, which combines info from sensors at the time of image capture with internal processing to try to remove blur from images that have already been shot; and mechanical, which shifts the CCD to compensate for shake. The 2.5-inch LCD is a decent size but has only 115,000 pixels, so images appear coarser on it than on cameras that include LCDs with higher pixel counts.

You wont find any manual exposure controls, but there are 15 scene modes, as well as exposure compensation of up to plus or minus 2EV in 1/3-stop increments. You can also choose between matrix and center-weighted metering, as well as auto and center-point autofocus. If you are shooting something that you expect may turn out blurry, you can try Nikons Best Shot Selector (BSS)- my personal favorite. With this turned on, the camera will shoot as many as 10 photos while you hold down the shutter release, then automatically select the one it thinks is the least blurry.

Holiday Gift Choice: 5X optical zoom; lens-shift vibration reduction; easy to use. Price range AU$342-AU$370. makes it a reasonable gift choice. Holiday Gift score for this item is 3 out of 5.

Google Talk goes fancy

Due Credit: Google Lab
Count how many instant massaging systems you have seen, I am sure it will take a lot of time and yet won"t be complete. Google Talk just merely sand cube in the midst of all, probably they cover only 1-2% of the whole IM users, for very good reason they don"t want anyone to know about this. If you are a Google Talk user, you should have noticed Google just released three significant new features to the product - file transfers, voicemail and music status. You will find the official Google release here.

File Transfer Status
File Transfer Status
File Transfer: Most awaited and dramatic feature ever to introduce in Google Talks, as most of the IM already has it. Files and folders can be sent to Google Talk friends by clicking the [send file] button. Surprisingly there are no limits on file sizes or type, and the recipient will see a preview of the image icon along with a status indicator within the chat session. Drawback-both users must be using the actual Google Talk client, for this feature to work. There is something about restricted proxies too, which might reduce the quality and speed of transfer.

Voicemail: I don"t why it took Google so long to bring this feature. You can now left Voicemails for friends who aren"t available to answer Google Talks call. The receiver doesn"t necessarily have to use Goggle Talk client, since they"ll receive an email with the message attached as an audio file. Maximum length of voicemail you can leave is 10 minutes long, pretty big compare to other IM"s.
Voicemail Away
Voicemail Away

Music Play Status
Music Play Status
Music Status: Since MSN and Yahoo have it in their IM Google should have had it earlier. Well better late then never, the good part is this one works for both online and offline music plays. If you are listening to music while logged in to Google Talk, you can show your contacts what you are listening to by selecting |show current music track| from your status drop down menu. This is only for |supported music players| like- iTunes, Windows Media Player, Winamp and Yahoo Music Engine (they expressed their plan to increase supported players).

Special Note: Only for Windows Users, No Mac or Linux version released yet.

Due Credit: Info-Reuters.uk, Volkswagen Germany; Picture-Volkswagen
How automobile enthusiastic are you? Even if you have simple interest in Automobile industries or just cars "Volkswagen" should be very much common to you. Volkswagen which is a German company and word's 3rd largest automaker. the word "Volkswagen", is a German word which can be translated to english as "For the Love of the car" or "For the love of people's car". Anyway enough history lesson, let's get to the point. Volkswagen created a history or milestone on Nov 22, 2006 when one of its model Touareg V10 TDI has succeeded in towing a Boeing 747-200 weighing approximately 155 tonnes.

The
Voxwagen Touareg V10 TDI
Touareg V10 TDI Towing Boeing 747
completed seven complete runs on the auxiliary runway at Dunsfold Aerodrome, 40 miles south west of London. Pretty impressive isn't it? The car was a standard production Touareg fitted with a special towing adapter to connect it with the aircraft towing link and loaded with 4.3 tonnes of metal ballast to bring its total weight to just over seven tonnes (7,030 kg) including the driver who's declared weight was 65 Kg. This Touareg V10 TDI model is already available in Australia (AU$121,990) and gained popularity

Yahoo's Holiday porno gifts

Due Credit: The Register, UK for the flash news
Usually major search engines by default filter pornography (both image and web results), but looks like in this holiday Yahoo! filter is not at work or not functioning.

If you type "franchise" and do a yahoo! image search all you will get is some serious hardcore porno pictures! I don't get it what is the franchise and porno relation. This news was popped up in the Register UK 4-5 hours ago. And just before posting it, when i query again in Yahoo! it still there

SGH-P930, Samsung's new Mobile TV phone

Due Credit: Samsung,Seoul Korea
We have seen many kind of mobile solution in past few years. Not to mention a lot of rumors too, like- Nokia N97 rumor (Finally which I found to be a hoax). No matter what you can not just ignore the mobile world, its changing in lightening speed. Samsung announced (November 22, 2006) that they are introducing a new mobile TV phone to the Italian market this month through Telecom Italia. Since it's almost end of the month, so expect it within one week swarming Italian market (rest of the Europe will follow maybe in next few months). They name this exceptional model, SGH-P930.

Robot that can adopt

Due Credit: Journal Science, Cornell University, AP Photos
Apparently the whole gadget and tech world is so busy with PS3 riot debut in North America that they forgot Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., built a four-legged robot that can sense damage to its body and figure out how to adjust and keep going. This remarkable development was published on Friday issue of Journal Science.

Science has came across far beyond imagination in last few decades, but still Robotics
StarFish Robot
StarFish Robot
remain a mystery and limited application within industrial plants. Probably the biggest reason is scientist were too busy to give robots human looks, rather then attitude/habit. In general what we do when we hurt our legs/hand, we adjust with the environment, we start limping. Human quality/habit to adopt has been always a mystery to science. We have built robot that walk like human, we have sent robots in outer space too but one thing always lacking is we couldn't give them ability to adopt in different environment, unexpected situation

Let the Brain do the things for you

First of all I like to apologies for sudden absence (due to business reason). Looks like this short break gave some advantage of researching. Hitachi’s medical wing Hitachi Medical Systems comes up with an innovative an exceptional experimental technology, that we only seen in science fiction movies. Well its true science is a lot fiction if you don’t know about the facts.
Optical Topography
Optical Topography (Credit: Hitachi Jp)

Hitachi has successfully tested a brain-machine interface that allows users to turn power switches on and off with their mind. Relying on optical topography, a neuron-imaging technique that uses near-infrared light to map blood concentration in the brain, the system can recognize the changes in brain blood flow associated with mental activity and translate those changes into voltage signals for controlling external devices. In the experiments, test subjects were able to activate the power switch of a model train by performing mental arithmetic and reciting items from memory. It takes only 0.1 second to perform one cycle of measurement, calculation and display, so this system provides a "real-time" measurement of the brain's activity

World's smallest satellite phone

We are talking about satellite phone, which is way too much large in size compare to the cellular phones we are enjoying. Well this was true few days ago, not anymore those are also getting smaller.

48 hours ago Global Star introduced world’s smallest satellite phone GSP 1700. The phone measures 225cc in total volume and weighs 200 grams (including battery). The height is 135 mm, the width is 55 mm and the thickness is 37 mm. The antenna, when held in a vertical position, communicates with the Globalstar satellite at elevations more than 10 degrees above the horizon. The Globalstar antenna rotates and stows into the handset for convenience when not in use. The key specifications are:

Like.com brings up Visual Image search

Like.com
Riya a startup company in Silicon Valley, which is known
Like.com Search
Likeness Search
as a photo search company specialized in facial recognition. They just introduced an image search engine Like.com.

Like.com is currently covering image searches on Shoes, Jewelries, handbags and Watches. So what is the difference? There are a lot image search engines, right? But trust me Like.com has something new to offer, where our traditional search engines took our keyword and matches image title/description to deliver search results. You have to agree those titles or descriptions are so not enough to mach close to your intended search, as I remember sometimes when I am in great pressure in work, I upload images with just numbers as title with no description. Other issue is text can not always describe pictures properly

OpenOffice 4.0.2 is here- for Free

Well I am a bit late talking about this incredible software, which opens up new era in open sourcing. On 13th October, 2006 OpenOffice.org celebrates its 6th birthday and at the same time launched OpenOffice.org 2.0.4. Those who don’t know OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites (Mac office and Microsoft office too). This is free in every sense-free download, redistributable. OpenOffice.org uses the LGPL (GNU Lesser General Public License).

OpenOffice.org runs on several versions of Windows, including 98, ME, 2000, and XP. Contributed ports of OpenOffice.org exist for FreeBSD, Apple MacOSX, Irix, Linux-PPC, Linux s390, Linux Sparc, and Solaris Intel. Porting activity is underway for Linux/Apha, HPUX, and AIX and developer help is needed for those platforms. Around 64 MB memory and 200 MB disk space is required for recent version of OpenOffice.org installation

Zune speculation and reality

Zune (Though this name has some other meaning in Hebrew and French Canadian term, and
Microsoft's Zune
Microsoft's Zune
which isn’t good) is a brand from Microsoft that incorporates a line of portable media players, software that will drive the devices, and an online service for acquiring and sharing media. It was previously thought that Zune was one of Microsoft's media players under "Project Argo". However, it now seems that the "Zune" brand will be used for all media players and other services, throughout the new project, just like Apple’s iPod. MSN music site’s download section will be disband and brought to Zune site.

Microsoft will be using a new digital rights management (DRM) system to protect content on the Zune system, and the Zune will not support Microsoft PlaysForSure or other DRM systems such as FairPlay. Microsoft has announced a music store called the Zune Marketplace that will integrate with the Zune player. They have announced "millions of songs" available for purchase using Microsoft Points, the same currency used on Xbox Live for per-song purchase. The Zune Marketplace can also be used as a subscription-based flat-fee service, if users purchase a monthly "Zune Pass

Ride On ASUS-Lamborghini VX1

It’s not new that sports car craze motivated laptop’s design; we had seen Acer’s Ferrari series. Now Asus come up with another legend in sport’s car industry, Italian Lamborghini featured in its latest laptop series. ASUS-Lamborghini VX1 is an extreme and spectacular expression of the ASUS and Lamborghini spirit that, with the look alone, exudes power, speed, strength and beauty. ASUS-Lamborghini VX1 powered by Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology. The dual-core processing capabilities of the VX1 offers

desktop level computing performance such as faster processing and high quality video/ audio enjoyment while enabling high mobility and better productivity with smaller form factor and longer battery life. The 15" VX1, weighing less than most of the 14" notebooks, is a powerful work machine with superior mobility. These are just few to mention among its powerful bunch of features. Personally I am impressed by this, never expected this kind of powerful computing standard from ASUS. Not to mention the looks, when I hold my first test VX1, I was feeling like touching Lamborghini itself. As you can tell I am totally stoned by the looks and performance, let’s take pick what’s with this baby:-
